Everyone hates the word BUDGET. The word carries so many negative connotations but I’m about to change all that not only here in this online community but within my family as well. When you break it down a budget is nothing more than a plan for your money. You plan your vacations, you plan your career, you even plan your meals so why wouldn’t you create a plan for your money. Here are some simple tricks to Budgeting: o Have a plan on paper BEFORE the money comes in – Tell your money where it is going before it hits your bank out. It is best to do this on a monthly basis but everyone’s situation is unique so do what works best for your income schedule. Whatever you choose to do make sure you put your plan on paper. The plan should include all of your income for the coming month as well as an estimate of your expenses for the next month. It is better to overestimate your expenses in the beginning than it is underestimate. As you get in the habit of creating a budget your estimates will become more accurate. The end result of your budget [...]

“Oh, that You would bless m and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain! And God granted him his request.” I Chronicles 4:10 NLT I recognize that I cannot make it on this journey, trust me I’ve tried and failed but this journey and the lessons contained in this journey are bigger than me. Whether or not you believe in a higher power it is important to include others in your journey. The power of a community of supporters (and haters) helps elevate your outcome. Friends and enemies drive you to achieve greater results and stretch you beyond your comfort zone. This belief is a large reason why I am sharing this experience online, I enjoy the challenges of others because I know with those challenges I am going to rise to a higher level of achievement. So please do not hesitate to bring it on…trust me I can handle it! Here is that stretching in action: The other day I was sitting around with my family and we were discussing upcoming financial priorities (many of which did not include paying down debt but we’ll dig into [...]

It’s been a while since our last meeting. To be honest I’ve gone back and forth with whether or not I want to disclose my life for everyone to see. But here I am once again ready to go for it and ready to be held accountable to all of my readers. So here’s what’s happened since we last talked: I’ve succumbed to the reality that I needed to take on a real J-O-B. I have not given up on my dreams of becoming self-employed just need to pay my bills on a regular basis. Although I’m working a 9 to 5 my financial problems seem to remain the same for several reasons: now I’m paying rent and all the living expenses that come along with it but I am also now supporting a family. Basically the money available to pay down debt and start a new business is not nearly what I thought it would be but I’m making progress…albeit minimal progress I’ve also realized that I need to go back to the basics. That huge debt burden that I carry is very overwhelming and every time I think about the numbers I get discouraged. The shear thought of [...]

So the last time we gathered together I revealed to you my true financial situation. As of February 27, 2010 I am $262,134.33 and counting in debt (due to interest not me running around taking out loans!) And no this amount does not include a house although technically I still own one. I’m an educated woman, hell I have a degree in Finance how could I possibly accumulate that much debt? Let’s be honest a degree in Finance does not translate into knowing about personal finance or how to handle money. Those two areas are totally different and to be honest if folks knew anything about debt and money, Wall Street may not have needed a bailout…just a thought. Moving on…. About 92% of my debt is due to student loans. Yeah I know ridiculous and no I didn’t go to medical school. Of that student loan debt about $13,000 is attributed to my Finance degree, the rest is due to my graduate education. What’s even more ridiculous is that I received a scholarship for my graduate education, which covered about a third of my tuition. And I still managed to accumulate enough debt that I’d be able to buy [...]

Here we go time for my full disclosure moment. This first posting is a week late because I talked myself out of doing this so many times over the past week that I’m surprised that I’m here writing now. I’ve struggled with this blog because I’m such a private person and this is the exact opposite of everything that is me, plus in all honesty I hate to write. I will warn you now this blog is ME, I’m going all in, I’m not holding anything back, I’m not trying to impress anyone or obtain sympathy votes or pats on the back (although both are greatly appreciated!) You may agree with some things, you WILL disagree with most things but that’s what makes this journey so much fun, I’m going to do me! Although I have urban-tendencies (Example: I’m going to do me = Imma do me) I will try my best to communicate in a way that makes me sound at least somewhat educated…I said I would TRY! I’ve committed to this journey and I need your help to hold me accountable. Now that I’ve quieted the little voice in my head (at least for the time being) let’s [...]
